Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the best source of water for my animal?
The VERY best source of water is ALWAYS an automated water system. This can be as simple as an automated waterer OR a bit more complicated like a water trough. Either way, the system should be fed with fresh water through a hose or plumbing fixture. “Buckets” of water are not reliable as most livestock like to play in their waterers and often knock them over. If you are not paying close attention to their water needs, they can quickly dehydrate.
  • Will my animal need grooming?
Yes! All livestock animals need grooming and care. It is different for each of them, but ALL love the attention that comes with such care. You will find that this will be bring you AND your animal great pleasure. It is during this time that your relationship will thrive and grow.
  • What will I need for my animal BEFORE I bring them home?
Generally speaking, your animal will need a fresh water source, proper nutrition and a safe living environment. You will want to prepare for this BEFORE your animal arrives. Tiny Tales Livestock will advise as to the best arrangements for you and the type of animal you have selected.
  • Can my animal live alone OR does it require a companion?
ALL livestock animals benefit from the company of a herd mate. Depending upon the breed, you can mix and match to “buddy” them up with a companion. In the wild, they are naturally “prey” animals and feel most safe with a “buddy”. This buddy generally serves as the eyes and ears of the herd to alert when danger is near. They will watch over one another during slumber and become an integral part of the animals security system.
  • Will I need to shear my animal? If so, how often?
f the livestock animals available through Tiny Tales, only the sheep and alpaca require shearing. Mini horses and donkeys can benefit from shearing, especially during the hot Hawaii summer months, however, it is not a requirement as with sheep and alpaca. Most sheep and alpaca should be shorn at least once a year. However, Blacknose Valais Sheep require shearing twice a year given the rate and length of their hair growth.
  • What should I feed my animal?
Each animal is different and all require specific vitamins & nutrients for optimal health. Tiny Tails Livestock will guide you through your feed options and help to develop the best feeding program for you and your animals.
